A bunch of people worked on charming up OwnCloud so that it would
specifically use upstream's versions on your schedule instead of
relying on out of date distro packages:

iirc there used to be a mention of this method on the website but it's
not there anymore. The charm has tests that we run routinely on HP
Cloud, AWS, and LXC. That's what I currently recommend to Ubuntu users
who want to use OwnCloud.
