This requires rebuilding the kernel with CONFIG_MODULE_COMPRESS_ZSTD=y.
The kmod package which provide depmod is already build with --with-zstd.
In can look into this.

Will the user still be able to add further modules and will machine
specific configuration files (e.g. for booting from iSCSI) still be
included into the initrd?
