A wrong install of Ubuntu is a subjective thing! Having said that the
default installation of Ubuntu does not create a separate /boot
partition so no you didn't miss anything. A separate /boot partition is
used if you perform an install with encryption. But your question brings
up a good point - the majority of users installing Ubuntu will not have
a separate /boot partition.
