I recently did the work to merge `shadow`, and during the review
process @schopin pointed out that maybe we should discuss here about
the main change, so here we are.
In Debian, the `login` binary package has recently moved from the
`shadow` source package to the `util-linux` one. Everything is
discussed on this (quite old and long) bug [1], but the TL;DR is the
following:
- The bug was originally opened in 2016 with the aim to improve
consistency with other distros.
- Followed a long thread discussion many interesting details until 2020
when it went dormant.
- The bug was reactivated this last summer by @bluca, this time with
a real need to do the transition: util-linux's version of `login` is
well integrated with autologin for containers and VMs. I'm not very
familiar with this (see message #129 for details), but the use-case
seems legit to me.
- The work was finally done by @zeha, and the bug closed in August.
The merge of both packages is done and mostly ready to upload (see bugs
[2] and [3]), and can be tested in my PPA [4]. If nobody raises any
concern with this change, we will proceed with the upload in January.
Happy EoY :-)
