For what it's worth Edubuntu and Ubuntu Studio have already moved their
respective IRC channels to Matrix rooms. The IRC channels are merely
being monitored.
The Ubuntu Studio website no longer links to the IRC channels, and the
only links that still point to the IRC channels are in the Ubuntu
Studio Information submenu of the launcher menu in 22.04. When Ubuntu
Studio 22.04 goes EOL in April (3 year life cycle), the Ubuntu Studio
IRC channels will also be effectively be EOL.

#devel:ubuntu.com and #release:ubuntu.com both already exist and were
set-up by the Matrix council to make the transition smooth. There's
even a queuebot-like bot in #release:ubuntu.com.
If bridging were to happen, then obviously one of the queuebots (either
the one in Matrix or the one on IRC) would have to disappear as to not
duplicate messages. Either way, the Matrix council has the ability to
work with that.

The ability to bridge is still work-in-progress but should be ready for
deployment any day now. I suggest getting ahold of someone from the
Matrix council or Mauro Gaspari (added to this conversation) for more
details.

Slightly harder than you'd think. Libera requires it be ipv6 enabled
with each bridged user having a separate ipv6 address that gets
assigned by the bridging process (idk how it works, tbh).
Unfortunately, getting that set-up was a large task for IS, but I think
they're either close or done.
Bridging will be on a channel-by-channel basis.

It can be done, but if it were to be done then the conversation about
bridging would be much more complicated, i.e. which channel does the
Matrix room get bridged to? etc.
Great topic, Robie! I'm glad someone is bringing it up!
